Abstract

The complex trajectory of the shaping of Brazil’s territory may have been influenced more recently by two contingencies: internally, since the second half of the 1950s, the practice of planning has emerged as a means of coordinating efforts with a view to achieving strategic objectives; externally, since the second half of the 1970s, the movement to integrate the world market, recognised by the term globalisation, has accelerated. In this article we intend to analyse the recent trajectory of territorial organisation, with special attention to regional conformation, based on the way in which the Brazilian economy has been integrated into the world market, considering, on the one hand, the experience of planning and, on the other, the implications of globalisation.
