Abstract

This paper is about the economics of culture, an expression that refers to a large set of activities regarding the production and distribution of cultural goods and services - which attract considerable and increasing attention internationally. Such interest is indicated by growth of the related research, in many cases highlighting the connections between economics of culture and socioeconomic development in urban spaces. The reality observed in this study is the one of Florianópolis, where institutions like the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina and the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, among others, play an important cultural role, offering training programs focusing on culture, particularly in the art sector. The work undertaken tries to detect the existence of these activities in the municipal district and discuss aspects of their working conditions. The adopted profile is inspired by the international debate about the relation between cultural activity expansion and income generation, alongside urban environment revitalization. Some promotion suggestions are made, contemplating local development of culture and the urban revitalization of downtown Florianópolis.
