Abstract

American cities produced a unique space, differently from urban areas from Europe and Latin America. This uniqueness is explained by several historical facts that enabled a kind of urban development based on individual rights and economic interests. Today, while American cities struggle to repair past mistakes, the same mistakes are being repeated in other countries, notably in Brazil. This article relates the challenges faced by American cities nowadays, explaining its origin and alternatives being adopted to reverse a misguided and unsustainable trend, pretending to call the attention of Brazilian architects and urbanites to ensure that these same mistakes are not repeated.
