Abstract

This essay argues that the nature of the socioeconomic changes, promoted in the period of economic growth after 2004, should be well comprehended so its spatial impacts can be evaluated and the legitimacy of regional planning decisions can be questioned. The recent governmental plans and programs, the statehood and the current process of states’ rescaling, reconfiguring the connections between capital, institutions and socio political forces, are placed in the center of analysis, pointing out the specificities of the Brazilian federalism. Analyses of the subjects and decision-making agents – and their respective scale politicies – are proposed. The emphasis is upon the restructuring process of the state’s spatial organization.
