Abstract

This paper looks into several aspects of theoretical discussions on urban social movements in Brazil through the study of some experiences in the Greater Curitiba ( Metropolitan area). Comparing theory to concrete cases, I attempt to shed light on the emergence of this type of movement in recent times (post 1970), considering transformations in the economic basis and in the State of Paraná’s demographic dynamics as key elements in the process. I also take a brief look at the urban planning activities carried out in this region, and how several popular segments have reacted toward them. I finalize with a discussion on the role that popular mobilizations like those considered here, have in building new forms of citizenship.
