Abstract

The present article analyzes farmland occupation in the State of Paraná between 1985-1995, trying to identify the factors contributing for it and some consequences of this process, such as the increasing population exodus from municipalities in which the work market is strongly dependent on farming activities. It can be noticed that farmland occupation reduction and the migration processes arising from it, happen when the urban labor market is slowing down and experiencing structural changes, thus increasing the barriers which prevent the productive migrant labor force from being inserted in the urban labor market. It is necessary to emphasize the elaboration of new regional development policies addressed to maintaining and defining occupation alternatives for the rural workers that still remain in rural areas.
