Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to contribute to elucidate the polemic that involves the subject of the effects of the technological progress on the employment. Some theoretical ones defend that the technological innovations generate it called technological unemployment (structural). On the other hand, others defend that diffusion helps to maintain certain employment level, once it guarantees larger competitiveness to the companies. In this paper it is made an empiric analysis of the employment level in the national and world automobile industry. The methodology consists in the econometric analysis of temporary series, trying to verify the technological progress in this section causes reduction in the employment level. The results show tendency of reduction structural estatistically significant for the level of employment of the analyzed developed countries, except for Japan. To Brazil this tendency estatistically significant is not shown, although it is proven a relative loss of employment.
