Abstract

The Brazilian experience in ethanol production is recognized worldwide as a success. The “Proalcool” program, created in 1975 can be seen as a landmark of this trajectory. The creation of flex-fuel technology in 2003 seems to consolidate the ethanol market in Brazil. Globally, the increasing rates of oil prices, the worsening conflict in major producing areas and mobilization to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases extol the use of biofuels as a viable alternative to compose the global energy matrix and contribute for a better fit of the equation. The work’s goal is to analyze these issues and the consequent challenge of inserting Brazil into the global market for ethanol.
