Migratory Dynamics in the Region of Influence of São João del-Rei: regional space flows and organization

Abstract

Since the late 1970s, there are evidences of reduction in the relative weight of the main Brazilian cities. It has simultaneously occurred with the intensification of emigrant flows to other urban nucleuses in the country. Although Belo Horizonte had maintained its regional prevalence and continued to attract significant contingent of people, who came mainly from within Minas Gerais state, there are strong signs of demographic and economic dispersion to the interior, strengthening some regional centers. This article aims to analyze the migratory dynamic  in the Region of Influence of São João del-Rei, as well as indicate its possible relation with the restructuration of the regional space and the central role played by the city. To this purpose we used the 1991 and 2000 demographic censuses microdata, in order to identify the main intercity flows - using the fixed date migration variable. The Region of Influence of São João del-Rei, despite its small stock of population, has been marked by the intensification of interregional migration flows. Although the links with other regions of the state have not been widened, the population exchanges between the cities within the Region of Influence have consolidated the role of São João del-Rei as a regional pole.
