The Importance of a Development Bank in Employment and Income Generation in Paraná State: the BRDE’s case

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze – through an input-output approach – the generation of employment and income derived from financial contracts made by the Regional Development Bank of Southern (BRDE), for 2010 and 2011, contextualizing this Bank in the development of the Paraná State. The sectors that more received credit of BRDE were: agriculture, commerce,food and private services, therefore, these were the sectors in which the credit released had greatest impact on jobs in the “paranaense” economy. Thus, the credit contracts released by BRDE, in Paraná, contributed to generated 87,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state, and 17,000 direct and indirect jobs in the rest of Brazil. The total remuneration generated, directly and indirectly, was over half a billion dollars, with about 430 million in Paraná State. Increasesin employment and income is a necessary condition, but not sufficient, for achieving the development of Paraná. However, this function is a pro-active role that the BRDE makes for development.
