Abstract

This article discusses the decentralization of large-scale tertiary ventures in the space of metropolitan areas in Brazil. The study focuses on Gravataí, a peripheral city of Porto Alegre Metropolitan Area, which has received many recent private investments. The objective of this paper is to discuss the role of large-scale tertiary ventures in the process of spatial structuring of metropolitan areas in contemporary times. Initially the work addresses the metropolitan areas in the new era of globalized capitalism, submitted to different processes, such as the multi-nucleation of activities; diffuse population growth, redefinition of regional infrastructures, among others. The paper also deals with the potential of large-scale tertiary ventures on structuring the space in their surroundings. Sequentially, the case study of Gravataí is presented, identifying and locating the main recent tertiary ventures (planned and under construction). The paper discusses the location strategies as well as the possible impacts of these new developments on the space. The work concludes that location strategies and impacts should not be sought in an isolated city perspective, but considered in a dynamic and complex process of regional structuring.
