Abstract

The most sustainable agricultural alternatives in the Amazon depend on a new technological standard, the establishment of which would involve a great deal of effort being put into widening current scientific and technological frontiers, with an impact on small, mid-size and large producers. The time-consuming procedures of the current funding and assessment system are detrimental to agricultural research, with risks and uncertainties that should not be restricted to publication indices. Both reduction of environmental impact and generation of job and income will depend on new economic proposals advocated by non-governmental organizations and other external entities, such as extractive vegetal production, carbon trading, and traditional activities. Using deforested areas for more suitable activities is more important for the population as a whole than returning to the forest.
