Abstract

The social and environmental crises of modern times are becoming more serious with the dominant neo-liberal model, and have led human beings to seek ways to increase the protection of nature and decrease social inequalities. Such processes depend on paradigmatic shifts that reflect broad ethical values. This search for the re-linking of living beings has on environmental education a strong ally since it encourages reflection and participation. In Brazil, the State has been formally supportive concerning environmental education, even though in practice it is not a priority. However, as its basis is participation with empowerment of individuals and groups, it ends up influencing policies that are in accordance to the new values. Such approach is important in all spheres, especially those related to protected areas, which frequently depend on local support for their survival.
