Abstract

This study aims at analysing the current configuration and evolution trends of the Brazilian urban system. It focuses on the transformation occurred in Brazilian cities during the growth process - demographically, functionally and spatially. It also aims at contributing to the definition of support strategies for establishing and implementating a national urban policy as well as subsidizing sector and region policies. The work includes the following studies: “Influence of Cities”, “Types of Brazilian Municipalities” and “Urban Agglomerations for Statistics Purposes”, all of them from the Brazilian Institute of Statistics and Geography - IBGE. It comprehends national and regional economic processes in the 1980’s and 1990’s, which are the basis of the urban system structure and development. The analysis resulted in three basic main basic products: “Urban System Hierarchy”, “Urban and Regional Systems” and “Brazil Urban Agglomerations”.
