Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the insertion of migrant population in the urban area of Manaus and its sociodemographics characteristics. The 2000 Demographic Census data was used, made available and organized by the Recuperação de Dados para Áreas Pequenas por Microcomputador (REDATAM), a free application software. A large number of migrant population was discerned. According to the last inquiry stage, 37,2% of the city’s resident population was migrant. As far as the origin of such population, 63,5% were from out of the state – 36,5% from within the state. The originary states with the largest portion of migrant population residing in Manaus: Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Regarding the immigrant insertion in the urban space of Manaus, it is noticed that the east side of the city received large contingent of the recently migrated population. This is consistent with the fact that this part of the city registered the highest demographic growth.
