Intergenerational transmission of inequality and education quality: a multilevel analysis of schools in the State of Paraná

Abstract

In this paper we estimate the determinants of education quality in the State of Paraná by controlling family, school, and geographic characteristics. We estimate complementarities
between families and schools and test educational characteristics which promotes equality and efficiency. Based on data from SAEB (Evaluation System of Basic Education) for the year 2003 a hierarchical linear model is applied. We show that municipal resources dedicated to education are an important factor in explaining a higher quality of regional educational system. We also show that differences in performance of educational system lead students to face unequal opportunities, which perpetuate intergenerational inequalities
