Abstract

Uruguay is the smallest country of the Mercosur. During the last decade investments, production and agrifood exports in Uruguay grew considerably and have reachedunprecedented values in terms of the country’s historical background. This dynamic isattributable to: i) changes in the international markets and Uruguay’s integration to theGlobal Agrifood Chains; ii) the design and implementation of the public and sectorialmacroeconomic policies, as well as the main agricultural changes; iii) the external regional, social and environmental factors that have resulted from these dynamic processes areconditions of sustainability for the “Uruguayan model” in the medium and long term.
