Abstract

This article has the purpose to examine the main aspects of the recent processes of growth and spatial deconcentration of the national higher education system as per the Brazilian regional development. The argument is that less centralized expansion of the national higher education system created promising conditions for the development of the “peripheral” geographic areas. The geographical decentralization of the higher education system also favored the extension of the territorial scope of the Brazilian national innovation system, which is characterized by strong regional concentration and limited spatial penetration. This decentralization has created conditions for a potential scientific and technological development more dispersed in spatial terms.
