Abstract

This article presents a bibliographic review of a food acquisition program (Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos - PAA), a public policy adopted in 2003. Our purpose is to discuss the State obligation of implementing public policies that ensure the right of regular access to quality food. Results achieved by the PAA in family farming cooperatives and the promotion of food security in public social service facilities around the country are presented in order to tackle this strategic issue. From our study, we conclude that besides being successful in both production and destination of food, the program is also responsible for the fact that Brazil is no longer present in FAO’s hunger map.
