Abstract

Rural development has assumed new forms and functionalities over the years in Brazil and inthe rest of the world. New social relations incorporated into rural areas have brought about new challenges and basal elements such as pluriactivity, a rural understanding beyond the agricultural sector, family production, non-agricultural activities, and the transformation of intangible goods such as landscape, quietness and silence into other ones. In view of this, we discuss emerging perspectives on such new rural development, with emphasis on the Brazilian case. The State assumes a central role in this change, especially in the induction and adaptation of public policies for rural development recently adopted. Today’s rural areas are no longer like past ones. A new countryside is taking form.
