Abstract

This article aims at comprehending the importance of water in economic growth in 28 municipalities of Paraná III Basin, given the demand for this resource in the farming sector. Water demand was calculated based on studies of the National Water Agency - ANA; Waters of Paraná Institute and the National System Operator - ONS. From the main economic activity of the region, which is farming, it was estimated the demand for water for irrigation and livestock. In short, the applied methodology revealed that the municipalities of Cascavel, Toledo and Marechal Cândido Rondon drive the region economically and that the basin had the highest share in farming production but they were also the biggest water consumers in the production process. Thus, the study highlighted the importance of water resources for economic activity in the region and the importance of preserving this resource.
